Darwin East Arm Port

Location: Darwin, Northern Territory
Dredge: Scorpio 30" & Warraber 12"
Date: October 2001 - July 2002
Client: Henry Walker Eltin

Warraber dredging at low tide.

The dredging of approximately 1.2 million m3 of mud and silt from the Port of Darwin was undertaken by Hall Contracting to enable the construction of a bund to link the Alice Springs - Darwin railway with East Arm Port.

The main bulk dredging of the bund alignment was carried out using Scorpio with a final sweeping of the area undertaken by Warraber prior to placement of bund material by Henry Walker Eltin. Dredged material was pumped up to a maximum distance of 2.3km to reclamation ponds. The majority of the distance was achieved primarily using the pump on Scorpio but the assistance of a 2800hp booster pump (commissioned for this project) was required when dredging was undertaken at outer pumping limits.

Works also included dredging the new container terminal area and the area beyond the existing groyne to enable its expansion.

Following completion of these works Hall Contracting were engaged by Thiess Pty Ltd (from July 2002 to March 2003) to undertake dredging of the foundation for a further expansion of the groyne area along with a Training Wall.
