Fortescue Metals Tailings Pond
Dredging - WA
Dredge: Mabuiag 16”, Everglade 14”
Client: FMG
Dates: May 2008 - January 2009.
Hall Contracting was engaged to carry out dredging of the tailings ponds at FMG’s port facility in Port Hedland, West Australia. The project involves dredging over 3million m3 of tailings a distance of 2.4km, in
order to prepare for the expansion of the iron ore facility. The fi ne tailings material was produced from the land reclamation and berth construction carried out by Jan De Nul’s large cutter suction dredger “Leonardo Da Vinci”.
In order to maintain water quality to meet strict environmental standards, Hall Contracting pumped return water back to the dredge pond to create an eff ective “closed circuit”. Working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, Hall used two of its Beaver 1200 cutter suction dredgers and 2 booster stations to move the material. The timely performance of the contract ensured that Fortescue Metals avoided costly delays to the capital works program.
