Mackay Small Craft Harbour.

Hall Contracting has carried out dredging of some 560,000 m3 of sand for a new small craft harbour at Mackay, Queensland. A new berm type breakwater constructed by John Holland Construction now provides safe anchorage for tourist vessels and pleasure craft that visit the Great Barrier Reef. Dredged material from the harbour was utilised as foreshore reclamation. Some 400,000 m3 of material was pumped 4 km through two booster pumps to an industrial estate.

To comply with the tight programme, Hall Contracting mobilised 2 x 400 mm Cutter Suction Dredges "Kikilu and Everglade". Everglade commenced by dredging the 160,000 m3 to the foreshore reclamation while Kikilu connected to the 4 km steel 400 mm line (2 x 600 HP 400 Booster Stations) to the industrial subdivision area. The boost pumps were remotely operated by telemetry from the dredge allowing the operator to run the pumps at the optimum speeds.

Hall Contracting purchased GPS equipment and the latest dredging computer software. This has been a major cost saving decision as it accurately positions the dredge and cutter position, both in the horizontal and vertical planes. This prevents over-dredging and over-sweeping of new line cuts, saving time and fuel.

The industrial subdivision has been progressively trimmed by Hall Contracting equipment using grade lasers to provide a level within 100 mm of design.

As the subdivision is bordered by a melaleuca wetland reserve, Hall Contracting followed strict operational and testing requirements to ensure the tail water and ground water remained at an acceptable level.
