BHP Port Hedland

Location: Port Hedland, Western Australia
Client: Jan De Nul
Dredge: Mabuiag
Dates: Sep 09 – Jan 10

Hall Contracting was commissioned by Jan De Nul to assist in the dredging project to create new Iron Ore facilities in Port Hedland. Hall used its Beaver 1200 dredge CSD Mabuiag to remove the overlying Acid Sulphate Soils in shallow water. This material was pumped into split hopper barges and then transported to the off shore spoil ground.

Following the removal of the overlying muds by Hall’s dredge Mabuaig, Jan De Nul’s large cutter dredge Leonardo Da Vinci came in to remove the hard calcaranite material to full depth.

Project Highlights
This project highlighted the ability of Hall to quickly respond to a request and mobilise equipment at short notice to a project with the highest safety standards. Hall’s third party accredited safety management
system integrated quickly and easily with BHP safety management system. The project was undertaken in a highly unionised and regulated environment, without any industrial issues. It also proved the versatility of our range of small cutter suction dredgers, with CSD Mabuiag being used in an unusual format discharging into a floating split hopper barge rather than into a reclamation area.
