Sand Dredging for Forest City Development Phase 1

#About this project

Covering a total of 3,425 acres, the 4 man-made island Forest City project was reclaimed in four phases: Island 1 (979 acres), Island 2 (1896 acres), Island 3 (405 acres) and Island 4 (145 acres). The $150 billion project is being developed in a joint venture by Chinese developer Country Garden, and a Malaysian company.

Hall Contracting was engaged by the contracted builder JBB to undertake the dredging component of Phase 1. This involved the dredging of approximately 3 million m3 of sand which was brought to the dredge site by sand carrier barges. Hall Contracting used its largest cutter suction dredge the ‘Eastern Aurora’ along with ‘Groote Eylant’ work boat in order to pump the material a distance of between 2100m and 2600m. A combination of Hall Contracting staff and locally sourced labour and sub-contractors was used to deliver the works.
